The initiative forms part of a broader landscape restoration programme targeting 10,000 trees across a 10-kilometre stretch spanning River Gituma and River Muthangacwa. The intervention is aligned with Kenya’s national climate commitments and global efforts to accelerate ecosystem restoration under the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

The tree species planted—Neem (Azadirachta indica), Melia volkensii, Asper bamboo, Acacia cassia, and Gmelina arborea—were carefully selected for their adaptability to semi-arid and riverine ecosystems. These species are known for their resilience, fast growth, and ability to stabilize soils, enhance biodiversity, and improve water retention.

“This initiative reflects the power of community-driven climate action,” said Mr. nicholas Mwenda, ACEECA Project Officer. “By restoring degraded riverbanks, we are not only protecting vital water sources but also strengthening livelihoods and building resilience against climate change.”

River Gituma, like many seasonal rivers in eastern Kenya, has experienced increasing degradation due to deforestation, soil erosion, and erratic rainfall patterns linked to climate change. The loss of vegetation cover has led to reduced water quality, siltation, and diminished ecosystem services for surrounding communities.

Through this restoration effort, ACEECA is promoting a nature-based solution that integrates environmental protection with socio-economic benefits. Bamboo, for instance, plays a critical role in riverbank stabilization and offers potential income streams through sustainable harvesting. Similarly, Melia volkensii and Neem trees provide timber, medicinal value, and shade, contributing to both ecological and community resilience.

The exercise brought together local farmers, youth groups, and community leaders, reinforcing a participatory approach to environmental governance. Community members were actively involved in site preparation, planting, and are expected to take ownership of ongoing maintenance and monitoring.

They plant, nurture, harvest, fetch water, prepare food, and care for families all while navigating the increasing pressures of climate change. Recognizing this reality, organizations like ACEECA have taken a deliberate stand: meaningful climate action must start with women.

The Silent Backbone: Rural Women at the Frontlines of Climate Change

Rural women are often described as “vulnerable” to climate change, but that description only tells half the story. The training focused on fruit seed orchard development as a climate-smart solution. Participants learned how to select resilient fruit species, prepare nurseries, manage soil health, and integrate trees into existing farms. The atmosphere was collaborative and energetic. Women shared experiences, asked questions, and exchanged ideas. Youth participants brought enthusiasm and innovation, bridging traditional knowledge with modern practices.

The signing marks the culmination of an engagement process that began on 30th April 2025, when ACEECA held initial consultations with the County Government. That earlier visit focused on introducing the ACEECA mandate and exploring areas of synergy to support the county’s environmental conservation and climate resilience agenda. Through open dialogue, both parties identified shared priorities and the need for a structured collaboration framework, leading to the MoU signed on Tuesday, January 13 2026.

Under the partnership, ACEECA and the County Government will work together across several strategic focus areas, including school greening programmes, promotion of circular economy models, river and landscape rehabilitation, water resource management, and youth and women empowerment. These areas were identified as critical to strengthening ecosystem protection while supporting sustainable livelihoods within communities.

One of the environmental concerns highlighted during the engagements was unsustainable sand harvesting, which has contributed to land degradation, riverbank erosion, and ecosystem disruption in parts of the county. While not the sole focus of the MoU, the issue will be addressed through targeted interventions aimed at promoting sustainable sand harvesting practices that balance environmental protection with community needs.

Speaking during the MoU signing, ACEECA chief Executive Officer, Ms. Pamela Gitobu emphasized the importance of partnerships between Non Governmental Organizations and county governments in driving practical, community-centered solutions to environmental and climate challenges. She noted that effective conservation must go hand in hand with education, inclusion, and local ownership.

County leadership welcomed the collaboration, noting that the ACEECA technical expertise, advocacy experience, and community engagement approach will strengthen the county’s ongoing efforts to safeguard natural resources and build resilience against climate-related risks.

The MoU provides a framework for joint planning, implementation, and monitoring of initiatives that promote environmental sustainability while empowering communities, particularly young people and women, to play an active role in conservation and green economic opportunities.

However, years of deforestation, unsustainable farming practices, sand harvesting, and encroachment have left the rivers under severe ecological strain, threatening both livelihoods and the environment.

Speaking at the event, ACEECA Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Pamela Gitobu emphasized that restoring river ecosystems is not only an environmental necessity but also a social and economic priority. “Healthy rivers mean healthy communities,” said Ms. Gitobu. “By working together, we can secure clean water, resilient farmlands, and a safer environment for future generations.”

County leaders echoed the commitment, pledging to integrate riparian restoration into county development plans while ensuring that women, youth, and PWDs are actively engaged in decision-making and implementation.

Community leaders from villages along Rivers Gituma and Muthangacwa also pledged to mobilize local residents for tree planting, riverbank protection, and adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices. Women and youth groups committed to championing environmental awareness campaigns and alternative livelihood programs to reduce pressure on natural resources.

The stakeholder forum concluded with a joint resolution that called for:

• Collaborative restoration programs between county authorities, ACEECA, and community groups.
• Strengthened enforcement of environmental regulations to prevent further encroachment.
• Scaling up of community-led conservation initiatives such as tree nurseries, riverbank fencing, and public education drives.

The meeting underscored the ACEECA growing role as a regional leader in climate advocacy and community mobilization. With the pledges made, the organization and its partners hope to turn words into action and revive Tharaka Nithi degraded riparian ecosystems into thriving green corridors once again.
