ACEECA strengthened its commitment to environmental conservation on 14th November 2025 by engaging learners at Materi Boys High School, Tharaka Nithi County, in a hands-on tree-planting and climate action advocacy event. The initiative forms part of ACEECA’s ongoing School Greening Programme, which aims to empower young people as champions of environmental restoration.

During the activity, students joined ACEECA’s team in planting bamboo, grevillea, and calliandra—species selected for their fast growth, ecological value, and resilience. The exercise not only expanded the school’s green cover but also contributed to healthier ecosystems within the surrounding landscape. Learners expressed enthusiasm as they participated in the planting, gaining practical knowledge on how tree restoration supports soil health, biodiversity, and climate adaptation.

Beyond the tree-planting, ACEECA facilitated an interactive discussion focused on climate change, environmental stewardship, and the role of young people in building sustainable communities. The session emphasized daily actions—such as responsible waste management, water conservation, and maintaining planted trees—that learners can adopt to enhance environmental resilience.

ACEECA’s Project Officer, Ms. Sharon Cherono highlighted the importance of involving schools in long-term restoration efforts, noting that empowering learners today builds a future generation that is conscious, informed, and proactive in addressing climate challenges.

The Materi Boys event marks another milestone in ACEECA’s mission to restore degraded landscapes, promote climate education, and cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility across learning institutions in Kenya.

Nairobi, Kenya — October 10, 2025: The African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) joined hundreds of environmental champions, community groups, and government agencies in marking these year’s Mazingira Day celebrations in Nairobi. The annual event, commemorated under the theme “Citizen-centric tree growing and environmental stewardship,” brought together diverse stakeholders for a city-wide clean-up and tree planting campaign across the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The day began with coordinated clean-up activities in major Downtown Streets within the city, demonstrating a shared commitment to reducing waste and promoting sustainable urban living. Volunteers, youth groups, private sector representatives, and civil society organizations participated actively in the exercise, reflecting the growing momentum around environmental consciousness in Kenya’s capital.

The celebrations culminated in a symbolic tree planting ceremony at the Grogon Globe, which underscored the need to restore Nairobi’s green cover and enhance urban resilience to climate change. Through the initiative, participants planted indigenous tree species in selected areas, reinforcing the message that environmental restoration begins with individual and collective action.

Representing ACEECA at the event, the organization’s delegation emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing urban environmental challenges such as pollution, poor waste management, and declining green spaces. “Sustainable cities begin with clean, green, and inclusive environments,” said ACEECA Chief Executive Officer. “By taking part in Mazingira Day, we reaffirm our commitment to driving community-based action and fostering climate-conscious urban development.”

Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya, Sept. 30, 2025 – Residents of Chiakariga in Tharaka Nithi County on Tuesday joined hands with the African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) to establish a community tree nursery aimed at restoring degraded riparian ecosystems.

The activity, held at Chiakariga Chief’s Camp, was part of the ACEECA Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems Project. Community members, alongside ACEECA staff, sowed seedbeds of Cassia siamea, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gmelina arborea, and Bambusa vulgaris. The tree species were selected for their ability to improve soils, control erosion, and provide economic and environmental benefits.

In addition to nursery establishment, participants received training on tree planting and management practices designed to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable land use.

“This nursery is an investment in our future and in the resilience of our ecosystems,” Ms. Sharon Cherono, ACEECA Project Officer told participants during the workshop.

Community members actively took part in sowing the seeds, many noting that the skills gained would help them manage their own tree planting efforts in the future. Once matured, the seedlings will be transplanted along degraded riparian zones in Tharaka Nithi, where they are expected to play a crucial role in restoring ecosystem functions and protecting water sources.

Climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation are pressing challenges in Kenya. Schools, as hubs of learning and community development, offer a powerful platform to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility from an early age. However, many schools lack structured programmes that engage students in practical environmental conservation efforts. The School Greening Programme bridges this gap by integrating environmental education with real-life action, directly involving students in transforming their schools into eco-friendly spaces.

Goals and Objectives

Overall Goal:

To foster environmental awareness, climate resilience, and ecological restoration in Kenyan secondary schools through participatory greening initiatives.
