1. Project Background

Kenya faces critical environmental challenges—deforestation, pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss—yet public awareness remains limited. The Environmental Education and Awareness Campaigns (EEAC) project empowers citizens with knowledge, skills, and motivation to adopt sustainable practices and advocate for policy change.

This initiative aligns with:

  • Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP)
  • UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
  • SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)

2. Project Objectives

  1. Mainstream Environmental Education – Integrate sustainability into school curricula and teacher training.
  2. Raise Public Awareness – Mobilize media, arts, and tech to shift attitudes and behaviors.
  3. Empower Youth Leadership – Build a network of young environmental champions.
  4. Drive Policy Engagement – Equip communities to advocate for greener policies.
  5. Promote Sustainable Lifestyles – Reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect ecosystems.

3. Key Activities

A. School-Based Programs

  • “Green Schools Initiative”:
    • Establish environmental clubs in 200+ schools.
    • Train 1,000+ teachers on climate-smart education.
    • Launch school recycling & tree-planting competitions.
  • Digital Learning: Develop e-learning modules on conservation.

B. Public Awareness Campaigns

  • “Mazingira Yetu” (“Our Environment”) National Campaign:
    • TV/Radio Shows: Partner with local stations for eco-programming.
    • Social Media Challenges: #PandaMiti (#PlantTrees), #BeatPlasticPollution.
    • Community Roadshows: Interactive workshops in markets & public spaces.

C. Youth & Community Empowerment

  • “Green Innovators Bootcamp”: Train youth in eco-entrepreneurship (e.g., upcycling, solar tech).
  • “Eco-Ambassador Program”: Mentor 500+ youth leaders to drive local projects.
  • “Women for Green Futures”: Train women’s groups on sustainable farming & clean energy.

D. Arts & Culture for Change

  • “Eco-Arts Festival”: Music, drama, and murals to inspire action.
  • Documentary Series: “Stories of Change” featuring local conservation heroes.

E. Policy & Advocacy

  • Citizen Science Initiatives: Community-led air/water quality monitoring.
  • County-Level Dialogues: Push for bans on single-use plastics & stronger EIA laws.
