In a significant step toward restoring Kenya’s fragile riverine ecosystems, the African Centre for Environment, Energy, and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA), in partnership with the River Gituma community, successfully planted 5,000 tree seedlings along the River Gituma corridor on 15 April 2026.

The initiative forms part of a broader landscape restoration programme targeting 10,000 trees across a 10-kilometre stretch spanning River Gituma and River Muthangacwa. The intervention is aligned with Kenya’s national climate commitments and global efforts to accelerate ecosystem restoration under the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

The tree species planted—Neem (Azadirachta indica), Melia volkensii, Asper bamboo, Acacia cassia, and Gmelina arborea—were carefully selected for their adaptability to semi-arid and riverine ecosystems. These species are known for their resilience, fast growth, and ability to stabilize soils, enhance biodiversity, and improve water retention.

“This initiative reflects the power of community-driven climate action,” said Mr. nicholas Mwenda, ACEECA Project Officer. “By restoring degraded riverbanks, we are not only protecting vital water sources but also strengthening livelihoods and building resilience against climate change.”

River Gituma, like many seasonal rivers in eastern Kenya, has experienced increasing degradation due to deforestation, soil erosion, and erratic rainfall patterns linked to climate change. The loss of vegetation cover has led to reduced water quality, siltation, and diminished ecosystem services for surrounding communities.

Through this restoration effort, ACEECA is promoting a nature-based solution that integrates environmental protection with socio-economic benefits. Bamboo, for instance, plays a critical role in riverbank stabilization and offers potential income streams through sustainable harvesting. Similarly, Melia volkensii and Neem trees provide timber, medicinal value, and shade, contributing to both ecological and community resilience.

The exercise brought together local farmers, youth groups, and community leaders, reinforcing a participatory approach to environmental governance. Community members were actively involved in site preparation, planting, and are expected to take ownership of ongoing maintenance and monitoring.

This initiative is anchored within ACEECA’s broader strategic pillars on Environmental Protection and Climate Action, which emphasize community stewardship, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable land management practices.

Beyond tree planting, the project integrates awareness creation on climate change, sustainable agriculture, and watershed management. It also contributes to long-term carbon sequestration, supporting Kenya’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient development pathway.

As climate impacts intensify across the Horn of Africa, initiatives such as this underscore the urgency of scaling up locally-led solutions that are both sustainable and inclusive.

ACEECA continues to call on partners, stakeholders, and communities to support and replicate ecosystem restoration efforts as a pathway to securing environmental sustainability and improving livelihoods.

Introduction: Where Climate Action Begins

Climate change often feels like a global problem discussed in conference halls, policy documents, and international summits. But far away from microphones and boardrooms, real climate action is happening quietly on small farms, along riverbanks, and within rural communities. And at the center of this action are rural women. These women may not call themselves climate activists, yet every day they make decisions that influence soil health, food systems, water conservation, and ecosystem restoration.

In Kenya’s rural landscapes, particularly in regions like Tharaka Nithi County, women are the backbone of agriculture and household resilience. They plant, nurture, harvest, fetch water, prepare food, and care for families all while navigating the increasing pressures of climate change. Recognizing this reality, organizations like ACEECA have taken a deliberate stand: meaningful climate action must start with women.

The Silent Backbone: Rural Women at the Frontlines of Climate Change

Rural women are often described as “vulnerable” to climate change, but that description only tells half the story. Yes, they face disproportionate risks, failed crops, water shortages, food insecurity, but they are also among the most powerful agents of change. Women hold deep indigenous knowledge of land, seasons, and biodiversity. They understand when rains should come, which crops survive drought, and how ecosystems respond to stress.

Despite this, their role is frequently overlooked. Development programs have historically focused on infrastructure, technology, or markets without fully integrating women’s voices. Yet without women’s participation, climate solutions rarely take root. Rural women are not just beneficiaries of climate projects; they are implementers, innovators, and custodians of sustainability.

Why Climate Change Hits Rural Women Hardest

Climate change does not affect everyone equally. For rural women, its impacts are deeply personal and immediate.

Food insecurity and nutrition

Women are responsible for household food production and preparation. When droughts reduce yields or floods destroy crops, women must stretch limited resources to feed families. Malnutrition often follows, especially among children and pregnant mothers.

Water scarcity and care burdens

As rivers dry up and water points disappear, women walk longer distances to fetch water. This increases physical strain, reduces time for income-generating activities, and exposes them to health risks. Climate change amplifies existing inequalities, turning daily chores into survival challenges.

Women as Natural Climate Stewards

Women’s daily interaction with natural resources places them in a unique position to protect and restore ecosystems. From seed selection to soil management, women make countless micro-decisions that influence environmental outcomes. Their traditional practices such as mixed cropping, mulching, and tree preservation align closely with modern climate-smart agriculture.

When women are empowered with knowledge and resources, they become champions of climate mitigation. They adopt sustainable farming practices faster, share knowledge within communities, and ensure long-term stewardship of land and water resources.

Nature-Based Solutions and the Power of Agroforestry

Nature-based solutions are increasingly recognized as effective responses to climate change. Agroforestry—integrating trees with crops and livestock—is one such solution. It improves soil fertility, increases biodiversity, sequesters carbon, and provides diversified income streams.

Fruit tree orchards, in particular, offer a powerful combination of climate mitigation and livelihood improvement. Trees absorb carbon, stabilize soils, conserve water, and provide nutritious food. For rural women, fruit farming is not just an environmental solution—it is an economic lifeline.

ACEECA’s Vision: Women-Centered Climate Action

ACEECA’s approach to climate action is grounded in a simple but transformative belief: development works best when women lead. Rather than imposing solutions, ACEECA partners with communities, listens to women’s priorities, and builds capacity from the ground up.

Through initiatives such as the Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems Project and the Women-Led Fruit Farming for Nutrition & Economic Growth Project, ACEECA integrates climate resilience, environmental restoration, and economic empowerment into one holistic framework.

Why Development Organizations Must Work With Women

Working with women is not a matter of inclusion—it is a matter of effectiveness. Evidence consistently shows that projects involving women deliver stronger, more sustainable outcomes. Women reinvest income into families, prioritize nutrition, and protect communal resources.

Development organizations that fail to engage women risk designing solutions that do not fit local realities. By contrast, women-led initiatives tend to endure long after project funding ends. When women are empowered, entire communities become more resilient to climate shocks.

From Policy to Practice: ACEECA’s Community-Based Approach

ACEECA translates global climate commitments into practical, community-driven action. Training sessions, demonstrations, and peer learning are conducted within communities, ensuring accessibility and relevance. The organization prioritizes hands-on learning, recognizing that practical skills are more empowering than theoretical knowledge.

This approach came to life during the recent climate-smart agroforestry training held in Chiakariga Community near Materi Market.

Chiakariga Community: Where Climate Action Meets Reality

Chiakariga is a semi-arid area where livelihoods depend heavily on agriculture. Climate variability has made farming increasingly unpredictable. Erratic rainfall, land degradation, and declining soil fertility threaten food security and incomes.

Against this backdrop, ACEECA’s intervention offered more than training—it offered hope. By bringing women-led groups and youth together, the initiative fostered collective action and shared responsibility for climate resilience.

Climate-Smart Agroforestry Training at Materi Market

The training focused on fruit seed orchard development as a climate-smart solution. Participants learned how to select resilient fruit species, prepare nurseries, manage soil health, and integrate trees into existing farms. Practical demonstrations allowed women to gain confidence in techniques they could immediately apply.

The atmosphere was collaborative and energetic. Women shared experiences, asked questions, and exchanged ideas. Youth participants brought enthusiasm and innovation, bridging traditional knowledge with modern practices.

Fruit Seed Orchards as a Tool for Climate Mitigation

Fruit seed orchards play a dual role. Environmentally, they contribute to carbon sequestration, restore degraded land, and support biodiversity. Economically, they provide sustainable income through fruit sales, seed production, and value addition.

For women, fruit orchards represent long-term security. Unlike seasonal crops, trees continue producing for years, offering stability in an uncertain climate. This long-term perspective aligns perfectly with women’s roles as planners and caregivers.

Women-Led Groups Driving Change on the Ground

Women-led groups are at the heart of ACEECA’s strategy. These groups provide platforms for collective learning, savings, and decision-making. Working together reduces risk, increases confidence, and strengthens social cohesion.

In Chiakariga, women’s groups emerged not just as participants, but as leaders—organizing nurseries, coordinating planting schedules, and mobilizing community support. Their leadership demonstrates how collective action amplifies impact.

Youth Engagement: Bridging Generations for Climate Resilience

Engaging youth alongside women ensures continuity. Young people bring energy, digital skills, and openness to innovation. When youth learn from women’s experiences, knowledge is transferred across generations.

This intergenerational collaboration strengthens community resilience, ensuring that climate-smart practices become embedded in local culture rather than short-term interventions.

Restoring Degraded Riparian Ecosystems

Riparian ecosystems play a crucial role in water regulation and biodiversity conservation. ACEECA’s restoration efforts focus on rehabilitating riverbanks through tree planting and sustainable land management.

Women’s involvement is critical here. As primary water users, women understand the importance of healthy riparian zones. Their participation ensures long-term protection and responsible use of restored ecosystems.

Economic Empowerment Through Sustainable Farming

Climate action must make economic sense. Fruit farming offers women opportunities to diversify income, access markets, and reduce vulnerability to crop failure. Increased income translates into better education, healthcare, and nutrition for families.

Economic empowerment also strengthens women’s voices in household and community decision-making, creating a positive feedback loop for development.

Nutrition, Livelihoods, and Climate Resilience

Improved nutrition is one of the most immediate benefits of women-led fruit farming. Access to fresh fruits enhances dietary diversity, particularly for children and expectant mothers.

At the same time, resilient livelihoods reduce dependency on food aid and external support. Communities become self-reliant, better equipped to withstand climate shocks.

Challenges Faced by Rural Women in Climate Action

Despite their potential, rural women face barriers including limited land ownership, access to finance, and decision-making power. Climate programs must address these structural challenges to unlock women’s full potential.

ACEECA’s model recognizes these realities, working through groups and partnerships to reduce barriers and amplify women’s agency.

Scaling Impact: Lessons for Development Organizations

The success of initiatives like the Chiakariga training offers valuable lessons. Development organizations must:

Prioritize women’s leadership

Invest in practical skills

Integrate climate, livelihoods, and nutrition

Foster community ownership

These principles are essential for sustainable impact.

The Road Ahead: Women at the Center of Climate Solutions

As climate challenges intensify, the need for inclusive, community-driven solutions becomes urgent. Rural women are not just affected by climate change—they are key to solving it.

Organizations that recognize and support women’s leadership will drive the most meaningful and lasting change.

Conclusion

The story of ACEECA’s work in Chiakariga Community is a powerful reminder that climate solutions do not have to be complex to be effective. By working with rural women, investing in agroforestry, and restoring ecosystems, development organizations can achieve climate mitigation, economic growth, and social transformation all at once. When women lead, communities thrive—and the planet benefits.

Programme Overview

The Climate-Smart Coffee Agroforestry Programme (CSCAP) is a flagship initiative of the African Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) designed to promote agroforestry as a sustainable, climate-resilient, and livelihood-enhancing model for coffee farming communities in Kenya. The programme recognizes the central role of smallholder coffee farmers in addressing climate change while safeguarding ecosystems and strengthening rural economies.

CSCAP integrates environmental conservation, climate action, sustainable energy use, and community livelihoods by embedding trees within coffee farming systems. By promoting diversified, tree-based coffee landscapes, the programme positions smallholder farmers not merely as beneficiaries of climate action, but as active agents of climate adaptation and mitigation. Through this approach, CSCAP seeks to enhance productivity, stabilize incomes, and build long-term resilience in Kenya’s coffee sector.

Programme Rationale

Kenya’s coffee sector is facing mounting pressures arising from climate variability, land degradation, declining yields, and the heightened vulnerability of smallholder farmers. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and increased incidence of pests and diseases have rendered conventional monocropping systems increasingly unsustainable. These challenges threaten not only coffee production but also the livelihoods of thousands of rural households that depend on the crop.

Agroforestry presents a proven, nature-based solution that directly responds to these challenges while aligning with ACEECA’s mission and strategic priorities. By integrating trees into coffee farms, agroforestry restores degraded landscapes, enhances soil fertility, improves water retention, and increases biodiversity. At the same time, it expands tree cover outside natural forests, contributing to climate mitigation while reducing pressure on forest ecosystems. Importantly, agroforestry strengthens rural livelihoods by diversifying income sources and improving the long-term sustainability of coffee farming systems.

Programme Goal

The overarching goal of the Climate-Smart Coffee Agroforestry Programme is to enhance climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment of smallholder coffee farmers through the widespread adoption of climate-smart agroforestry systems.

Specific Objectives

CSCAP seeks to achieve this goal through the following specific objectives. The programme aims to:

increase the adoption of agroforestry practices among coffee farmers in target counties, while enhancing on-farm tree cover using indigenous and multipurpose tree species.

It also focuses on improving soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation within coffee landscapes.

In parallel, the programme works to strengthen farmer incomes through diversified, agroforestry-based livelihood opportunities and to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s climate mitigation and adaptation commitments at both national and county levels.

Target Beneficiaries

The primary beneficiaries of the programme are smallholder coffee farmers who are most vulnerable to climate shocks and market volatility. CSCAP places a strong emphasis on the inclusion of women and youth groups, recognizing their critical role in sustainable agriculture and community development. Farmer cooperatives, producer organizations, and local community-based organizations are also key beneficiaries and partners, serving as important platforms for outreach, capacity building, and collective action.

Target Areas

The programme is implemented primarily in Kenya’s key coffee-growing regions, where climate risks and land pressure are most pronounced. These areas include Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, and Meru Counties. These regions offer high potential for agroforestry-based coffee systems due to their agro-ecological conditions and strong smallholder farming presence.

Programme Components

Farmer Capacity Building

Capacity building is a central pillar of CSCAP. The programme provides targeted training to farmers on climate-smart coffee agroforestry practices, including shade tree selection, spacing, and management. Farmers are trained on proper pruning techniques, soil conservation measures such as mulching and composting, and sustainable nutrient management. In addition, the programme builds farmer awareness on climate risks and equips communities with practical adaptation strategies to respond to changing climatic conditions.

Tree Seedling Production and Distribution

To support large-scale adoption of agroforestry, CSCAP promotes the establishment of community-based tree nurseries. These nurseries focus on the production of indigenous, fruit, and multipurpose tree species that are well-suited to coffee systems. Certified seedlings are distributed to participating farmers to ensure high survival rates and long-term environmental and economic benefits.

Demonstration and Learning Farms

The programme establishes model agroforestry coffee farms that serve as demonstration and learning sites. These farms provide practical, hands-on learning opportunities for farmers through peer-to-peer exchanges, field days, and farmer-to-farmer mentorship. Knowledge exchange platforms facilitate the sharing of best practices, lessons learned, and locally adapted solutions.

Youth and Women Engagement

CSCAP deliberately integrates youth and women into all programme components. Youth-led nursery enterprises are supported as pathways to green jobs and climate entrepreneurship, while women-focused agroforestry income activities enhance household livelihoods and food security. Through these interventions, the programme promotes inclusive participation and equitable access to climate-smart economic opportunities.

Sustainable Energy Linkages

The programme links agroforestry to sustainable energy solutions by promoting the use of agroforestry biomass as a renewable source of fuelwood. This approach reduces dependence on natural forests for energy needs and complements ACEECA’s broader organic and sustainable energy initiatives. By integrating energy considerations into agroforestry systems, CSCAP advances holistic and environmentally responsible resource use.

Advocacy and Policy Engagement

Beyond field-level implementation, CSCAP places strong emphasis on advocacy and policy engagement. ACEECA facilitates county-level policy dialogues to promote supportive frameworks for agroforestry adoption. Evidence generated from programme implementation is used to advocate for incentives, budget allocations, and the integration of agroforestry into climate and agricultural planning frameworks at both county and national levels.

Cross-Cutting Themes

The programme is guided by several cross-cutting principles, including gender equity and social inclusion, climate justice, and meaningful community participation. Indigenous knowledge systems are recognized and integrated alongside scientific approaches, while environmental education and awareness are mainstreamed across all programme activities to foster long-term behavioral change.

Expected Outcomes

Through the implementation of CSCAP, ACEECA anticipates:

increased adoption of coffee agroforestry systems across target counties.

Farmers are expected to experience improved coffee yields and quality

enhanced household incomes, and greater livelihood diversification.

At the landscape level, the programme will:

contribute to increased tree cover

improved biodiversity

reduced land degradation and soil erosion, and,

strengthened climate resilience among farming communities.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)

A robust Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning framework underpins CSCAP to ensure accountability, learning, and continuous improvement. Key indicators include:

the number of farmers adopting agroforestry practices

the number and survival rate of trees planted

changes in coffee yield and quality

levels of household income diversification

measurable indicators of environmental restoration.

Partnerships and Stakeholders

CSCAP is implemented through strategic partnerships with county governments, coffee cooperatives, and farmer organizations. Research institutions provide technical expertise, while development partners, donors, and private sector actors within sustainable coffee value chains support financing, innovation, and market access.

Sustainability Strategy

The long-term sustainability of the programme is anchored in farmer ownership and strong cooperative engagement. Income-generating agroforestry enterprises enhance economic viability, while policy integration and institutional support ensure continuity beyond project cycles. Continuous capacity building strengthens local knowledge and skills, enabling sustained adoption and scaling of climate-smart agroforestry practices.

Alignment with National and Global Frameworks

The Climate-Smart Coffee Agroforestry Programme aligns with key national and global development and climate frameworks, including the Kenya Climate Change Act, the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), and the National Tree Growing Strategy. It also contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land).

ACEECA Value Proposition

Through the Climate-Smart Coffee Agroforestry Programme, ACEECA positions itself as a leading advocate and implementer of nature-based climate solutions. The programme demonstrates how integrated approaches can protect ecosystems, enhance climate resilience, and improve livelihoods simultaneously. By bridging policy advocacy, community action, and environmental stewardship, CSCAP exemplifies ACEECA’s commitment to inclusive, impactful, and sustainable climate action in Kenya.

Taita Taveta County, Kenya – 13 January 2026 – The African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the County Government of Taita Taveta at the County Headquarters in Mwatate, formalizing a partnership aimed at addressing key environmental and climate challenges facing the county.

The signing marks the culmination of an engagement process that began on 30th April 2025, when ACEECA held initial consultations with the County Government. That earlier visit focused on introducing the ACEECA mandate and exploring areas of synergy to support the county’s environmental conservation and climate resilience agenda. Through open dialogue, both parties identified shared priorities and the need for a structured collaboration framework, leading to the MoU signed on Tuesday, January 13 2026.

Under the partnership, ACEECA and the County Government will work together across several strategic focus areas, including school greening programmes, promotion of circular economy models, river and landscape rehabilitation, water resource management, and youth and women empowerment. These areas were identified as critical to strengthening ecosystem protection while supporting sustainable livelihoods within communities.

One of the environmental concerns highlighted during the engagements was unsustainable sand harvesting, which has contributed to land degradation, riverbank erosion, and ecosystem disruption in parts of the county. While not the sole focus of the MoU, the issue will be addressed through targeted interventions aimed at promoting sustainable sand harvesting practices that balance environmental protection with community needs.

Speaking during the MoU signing, ACEECA chief Executive Officer, Ms. Pamela Gitobu emphasized the importance of partnerships between Non Governmental Organizations and county governments in driving practical, community-centered solutions to environmental and climate challenges. She noted that effective conservation must go hand in hand with education, inclusion, and local ownership.

County leadership welcomed the collaboration, noting that the ACEECA technical expertise, advocacy experience, and community engagement approach will strengthen the county’s ongoing efforts to safeguard natural resources and build resilience against climate-related risks.

The MoU provides a framework for joint planning, implementation, and monitoring of initiatives that promote environmental sustainability while empowering communities, particularly young people and women, to play an active role in conservation and green economic opportunities.

The ACEECA–Taita Taveta partnership reflects a shared commitment to protecting ecosystems, restoring landscapes, and ensuring that development today does not compromise the wellbeing of future generations.

ACEECA strengthened its commitment to environmental conservation on 14th November 2025 by engaging learners at Materi Boys High School, Tharaka Nithi County, in a hands-on tree-planting and climate action advocacy event. The initiative forms part of ACEECA’s ongoing School Greening Programme, which aims to empower young people as champions of environmental restoration.

During the activity, students joined ACEECA’s team in planting bamboo, grevillea, and calliandra—species selected for their fast growth, ecological value, and resilience. The exercise not only expanded the school’s green cover but also contributed to healthier ecosystems within the surrounding landscape. Learners expressed enthusiasm as they participated in the planting, gaining practical knowledge on how tree restoration supports soil health, biodiversity, and climate adaptation.

Beyond the tree-planting, ACEECA facilitated an interactive discussion focused on climate change, environmental stewardship, and the role of young people in building sustainable communities. The session emphasized daily actions—such as responsible waste management, water conservation, and maintaining planted trees—that learners can adopt to enhance environmental resilience.

ACEECA’s Project Officer, Ms. Sharon Cherono highlighted the importance of involving schools in long-term restoration efforts, noting that empowering learners today builds a future generation that is conscious, informed, and proactive in addressing climate challenges.

The Materi Boys event marks another milestone in ACEECA’s mission to restore degraded landscapes, promote climate education, and cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility across learning institutions in Kenya.

THARAKA NITHI, Kenya – November 14, 2025: The African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA), in collaboration with community members, the County Government of Tharaka Nithi, and the local Community Forest Association (CFA), conducted a successful riparian restoration activity. The initiative focused on planting bamboo, grevillea, and calliandra along degraded sections of the Mutangachwa River to promote ecosystem restoration, soil stabilization, and long-term climate resilience.

The restoration exercise brought together local residents, environmental champions, and county officials, all working towards a shared goal—protecting and rehabilitating critical riparian zones that are vital for water conservation, wildlife habitats, and community livelihoods.

Why Bamboo, Grevillea, and Calliandra?

The selected tree species play an essential role in revitalising riparian landscapes:

Bamboo: Known for its fast growth and strong root system, bamboo is highly effective in preventing soil erosion along riverbanks.

Grevillea: A versatile species that improves soil quality, enhances canopy cover, and supports biodiversity.

Calliandra: A nitrogen-fixing tree that enriches soils, supports fodder needs, and contributes to sustainable land management.

Together, these species create a resilient buffer zone that protects rivers from further degradation and strengthens the ecological integrity of the area.

Strengthening Community-Led Conservation Effort

The event showcased the power of community-driven environmental action. By involving local groups and the County Government, ACEECA aims to ensure that restoration efforts remain sustainable and community-owned.

Speaking during the exercise, ACEECA Project Officer, Ms. Sharon Cherono, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to restoring riparian ecosystems, promoting nature-based solutions, and supporting counties as they adopt climate-smart restoration practices.

This collaborative initiative is part of ACEECA’s broader mission to build environmentally resilient communities through conservation, sustainable energy advocacy, and climate adaptation efforts.

A Step Toward Long-Term Ecological Recovery

Tharaka Nithi’s riparian zones have faced increasing pressure from deforestation, erosion, and unsustainable land use. The restoration activity marks a significant milestone in reviving degraded river ecosystems, improving water quality, and preserving biodiversity for future generations.

ACEECA will continue to work with partners to monitor the growth of the planted species, engage local communities through environmental education, and expand riparian restoration activities across other vulnerable regions in Kenya.

This initiative forms part of ACEECA’s ongoing programme on the Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems in Tharaka Nithi County. Learn more.

Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya, Sept. 30, 2025 – Residents of Chiakariga in Tharaka Nithi County on Tuesday joined hands with the African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) to establish a community tree nursery aimed at restoring degraded riparian ecosystems.

The activity, held at Chiakariga Chief’s Camp, was part of the ACEECA Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems Project. Community members, alongside ACEECA staff, sowed seedbeds of Cassia siamea, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gmelina arborea, and Bambusa vulgaris. The tree species were selected for their ability to improve soils, control erosion, and provide economic and environmental benefits.

In addition to nursery establishment, participants received training on tree planting and management practices designed to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable land use.

“This nursery is an investment in our future and in the resilience of our ecosystems,” Ms. Sharon Cherono, ACEECA Project Officer told participants during the workshop.

Community members actively took part in sowing the seeds, many noting that the skills gained would help them manage their own tree planting efforts in the future. Once matured, the seedlings will be transplanted along degraded riparian zones in Tharaka Nithi, where they are expected to play a crucial role in restoring ecosystem functions and protecting water sources.

“This is a renewal of our land,” said one community elder. “What we planted today will be remembered by our children tomorrow.”

ACEECA noted that the success of the project depends on community involvement, adding that local participation ensures long-term ownership of restoration initiatives.

The nursery establishment marks the beginning of a series of restoration activities planned for Tharaka Nithi County, where degraded riparian areas continue to pose environmental and livelihood challenges.

During the meeting, participants highlighted the critical role riparian ecosystems play in sustaining biodiversity, supporting agriculture, and providing water for domestic and economic use. However, years of deforestation, unsustainable farming practices, sand harvesting, and encroachment have left the rivers under severe ecological strain, threatening both livelihoods and the environment.

Speaking at the event, ACEECA Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Pamela Gitobu emphasized that restoring river ecosystems is not only an environmental necessity but also a social and economic priority. “Healthy rivers mean healthy communities,” said Ms. Gitobu. “By working together, we can secure clean water, resilient farmlands, and a safer environment for future generations.”

County leaders echoed the commitment, pledging to integrate riparian restoration into county development plans while ensuring that women, youth, and PWDs are actively engaged in decision-making and implementation.

Community leaders from villages along Rivers Gituma and Muthangacwa also pledged to mobilize local residents for tree planting, riverbank protection, and adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices. Women and youth groups committed to championing environmental awareness campaigns and alternative livelihood programs to reduce pressure on natural resources.

The stakeholder forum concluded with a joint resolution that called for:

Collaborative restoration programs between county authorities, ACEECA, and community groups.

Strengthened enforcement of environmental regulations to prevent further encroachment.

Scaling up of community-led conservation initiatives such as tree nurseries, riverbank fencing, and public education drives.

The meeting underscored the ACEECA growing role as a regional leader in climate advocacy and community mobilization. With the pledges made, the organization and its partners hope to turn words into action and revive Tharaka Nithi degraded riparian ecosystems into thriving green corridors once again.

Project Name

Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems in Tharaka Nithi County

Implementing Organization

African Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) in partnership with the Working Group “Development Aid” (AK “EH”) eV, Germany.

Project Background

The Gituma and Muthangacwa Rivers in Tharaka Nithi County are vital water sources for local communities and biodiversity. However, these riparian ecosystems face severe degradation due to deforestation, soil erosion, and unsustainable land-use practices. The destruction of vegetation along riverbanks has led to reduced water availability, loss of biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods.

This project, funded by AK “EH,” aims to restore and protect these critical ecosystems through community-led reforestation, erosion control, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. By engaging smallholder farmers, women, youth, and local authorities, the project seeks to create lasting ecological and socio-economic benefits.

Project Objectives

Ecological Restoration: Rehabilitate 10 km of degraded riparian zones along the Gituma and Muthangacwa Rivers through tree and bamboo planting, erosion control measures, and sustainable land management.

Climate Resilience: Enhance the region’s capacity to withstand climate shocks by improving water retention, reducing soil erosion, and restoring biodiversity.

Livelihood Improvement: Empower communities through training in agroforestry, nursery management, and alternative income-generating activities like bamboo farming and beekeeping.

Community Engagement: Foster long-term stewardship of natural resources by involving local stakeholders in planning, implementation, and monitoring.

Key Activities

Stakeholder Mobilization: Conduct community meetings to establish project committees and secure local buy-in.

Erosion Control: Construct gabions and terraces along vulnerable riverbanks to stabilize soil and reduce sedimentation.

Reforestation: Plant 5,000 native trees and bamboo along 10 km of riparian zones, prioritizing climate-resilient species.

Capacity Building: Train 250 community members (including women and youth) in sustainable land-use practices, nursery management, and agroforestry.

Livelihood Diversification: Support community groups in establishing tree nurseries and bamboo-based enterprises.

Monitoring & Evaluation: Track tree survival rates, water quality improvements, and socio-economic impacts through community-led monitoring teams.

Expected Outcomes

10 km of restored riparian ecosystems with improved vegetation cover and soil stability.

Increased water availability and quality for domestic, agricultural, and livestock use.

Enhanced biodiversity through the reintroduction of native plant species and habitat restoration.

Strengthened livelihoods for 250+ beneficiaries through income-generating activities linked to conservation.

Long-term sustainability via community ownership, policy alignment with county government, and scalable models for neighboring regions.
