ACEECA Partners with Tharaka Nithi Community to Restore Degraded Riparian Ecosystems

ACEECA Partners with Tharaka Nithi Community to Restore Degraded Riparian Ecosystems

THARAKA NITHI, Kenya – November 14, 2025: The African Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA), in collaboration with community members, the County Government of Tharaka Nithi, and the local Community Forest Association (CFA), conducted a successful riparian restoration activity. The initiative focused on planting bamboo, grevillea, and calliandra along degraded sections of the Mutangachwa River to promote ecosystem restoration, soil stabilization, and long-term climate resilience.

The restoration exercise brought together local residents, environmental champions, and county officials, all working towards a shared goal—protecting and rehabilitating critical riparian zones that are vital for water conservation, wildlife habitats, and community livelihoods.

Why Bamboo, Grevillea, and Calliandra?

The selected tree species play an essential role in revitalising riparian landscapes:

  • Bamboo: Known for its fast growth and strong root system, bamboo is highly effective in preventing soil erosion along riverbanks.
  • Grevillea: A versatile species that improves soil quality, enhances canopy cover, and supports biodiversity.
  • Calliandra: A nitrogen-fixing tree that enriches soils, supports fodder needs, and contributes to sustainable land management.

Together, these species create a resilient buffer zone that protects rivers from further degradation and strengthens the ecological integrity of the area.

Strengthening Community-Led Conservation Effort

The event showcased the power of community-driven environmental action. By involving local groups and the County Government, ACEECA aims to ensure that restoration efforts remain sustainable and community-owned.

Speaking during the exercise, ACEECA Project Officer, Ms. Sharon Cherono, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to restoring riparian ecosystems, promoting nature-based solutions, and supporting counties as they adopt climate-smart restoration practices.

This collaborative initiative is part of ACEECA’s broader mission to build environmentally resilient communities through conservation, sustainable energy advocacy, and climate adaptation efforts.

A Step Toward Long-Term Ecological Recovery

Tharaka Nithi’s riparian zones have faced increasing pressure from deforestation, erosion, and unsustainable land use. The restoration activity marks a significant milestone in reviving degraded river ecosystems, improving water quality, and preserving biodiversity for future generations.

ACEECA will continue to work with partners to monitor the growth of the planted species, engage local communities through environmental education, and expand riparian restoration activities across other vulnerable regions in Kenya.
