ACEECA, in partnership with the River Gituma community, planted 5,000 climate-resilient trees on 15 April 2026 to restore degraded riverbanks in Tharaka Nithi County. The initiative promotes ecosystem recovery, strengthens community resilience, and advances sustainable, nature-based solutions to climate change.

ACEECA engaged students at Materi Boys High School in Tharaka Nithi County in a tree-planting and climate action advocacy event, planting bamboo and other indigenous species while empowering learners with knowledge on environmental conservation under the School Greening Programme.

ACEECA partnered with the Tharaka Nithi County Government and local community groups to restore degraded riparian areas through the planting of bamboo, grevillea and calliandra. The initiative aims to stabilise soils, enhance biodiversity and support long-term ecological recovery along the river.

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Hon. Geoffrey Mosira, addresses participants during the Mazingira Day celebrations in Nairobi, emphasizing the county’s commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.

Mazingira Day is Kenya’s national environmental awareness and action day, celebrated annually to promote environmental protection, waste management, and sustainable living.

Community members in Chiakariga, Tharaka Nithi County, have partnered with ACEECA to set up a tree nursery as part of the Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems Project. The nursery, established on September 30, 2025, features species such as Cassia siamea, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gmelina arborea, and Bambusa vulgaris.

The project “Restoration of Degraded Riparian Ecosystems in Tharaka Nithi County” rehabilitates 10 km of riverbanks along the Gituma and Muthangacwa Rivers through tree planting, erosion control, and community training. Led by ACEECA and AK “EH,” it boosts biodiversity, water security, and livelihoods via bamboo agroforestry and sustainable land-use practices.
