Practical Steps to Preserve Water: Call to Action on World Water Day 2025

Practical Steps to Preserve Water: Call to Action on World Water Day 2025
ACEECA officials proudly hold tree seedlings during a past visit to Ondiri Wetlands, symbolizing our unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and water preservation. As we celebrate World Water Day 2025 under the theme Glacier Preservation, we continue to champion sustainable practices and community-driven initiatives to protect our planet’s precious resources.

The African Center for Environment, Energy, and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA), is pleased and proud to celebrate the World Water Day 2025 under the theme Glacier Preservation. Water is life. Water conserves the ecosystems, communities, and next generations. Today, as one of our actions for commemorating this day, we donated 200 cariandra seedlings for planting to the Tharaka Nithi County, symbolizing our commitment toward sustainable water management and environmental conservation.

But preserving water isn’t just about large-scale efforts-it’s about the small ways we act on behalf of our most precious resource each day. Here are a few practical actions that you can adopt to help:

1. Fix Leaks and Drips

Did you know that just a thin stream of water running from a dripping faucet can amount to hundreds of liters lost in one year? So check your taps, pipes, and toilets for possible drips or leaks. It would only take a short time to saving water by fixing any leaks.

2. Develop Water-Saving Habits

Incorporate small changes to your daily activities that can save a lot of water because they add up:

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Prefer bucket showers or take a shower rather than running water.
  • Run your washing machine or dishwasher only when fully loaded.

3. Harvest Rainwater

Rainwater harvesting is a great idea to save indoor use from municipal supply. You can put a barrel or tank and siphon the rainwater falling on the roof into this tank. You can use this water for gardening, house cleaning, or flushing toilets.

4. Plant Water-Wise Trees and Plants

Today, ACEECA donated 200 cariandra seedlings for planting. They play important roles in water conservation against soil erosion, improving groundwater recharge, and maintaining the water cycle. Planting native, drought-hardy plants in your garden is a good way to reduce the amount of water needed and the dependence on imported plants.

5. Adopt Smart Irrigation Practices

If you have a garden or farm, prefer drip irrigation or use soaker hoses instead of sprinklers. These methods supply water directly to the roots while reducing evaporation and runoff. Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to prevent loss of water.

6. Reduce Your Water Footprint

Everything consumed has a water footprint, which refers to the amount of water associated with production. Possible ways to reduce this footprint are by reducing the intake of meat, which requires a lot of water, and shifting towards a more plant-based diet, supporting local and sustainable agriculture, and recycling and reusing items to minimize the water associated with their manufacture.

7. Save Natural Water Sources

Glaciers, rivers, lakes, and wetlands are among the major sources of freshwater, so you can contribute to protecting these ecosystems by doing the following:

  • Avoid polluting water bodies with chemicals, plastics, or waste.
  • Participate in community cleaning drives.
  • Advocate for laws that protect native freshwater bodies.

8. Educate and Advocate

Share what you learn about conserving water with friends, relatives, and the community. Advocate at local and national levels for the adoption of best practices in water management such that together, the reach of every advocate can multiply collective impacts.

9. Reason for Water Preservation

Water is not merely a resource; it is life. From drinking to growing food, water sustains every aspect of life. Yet, nowadays, pollution, climate change, and overuse all threaten this resource. Glaciers store about 69 percent of the freshwater on earth and have been melting away at alarming rates due to global warming. We save our water today to save the future for generations to come.

Our Committment in Water Conservation

At ACEECA, our belief is centered on promoting environmental conservation, sustainable energy, and climate resilience across the country. Among our activities include:

  • Teaching communities about sustained water usage.
  • Promoting reforestation projects and ecosystem restoration.
  • Advocating policies that protect and conserve the water resource and absorb climate change effects.

An example of our efforts just today in creating a greener and more sustainable future is this donation of 200 cariandra seedlings.

Let Us Change the World Together

This World Water Day, let’s all renew our commitment to preserve water in every way we can-from fixing a leak to planting a tree to advocating change, every drop counts. In this way, together, we can ensure that everyone has access to clean, fresh water.
