SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Our Commitment to a Water-Secure Future

Access to clean water and proper sanitation is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people across Africa still face water scarcity, pollution, and inadequate sanitation facilities. The Africa Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Advocacy (ACEECA) recognizes the critical role of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation in ensuring a healthy, sustainable future for communities.

Through conservation efforts, education, and partnerships, ACEECA is working to safeguard water resources, promote sustainable water management, and improve sanitation access for vulnerable populations.

Why SDG 6 Matters

SDG 6 aims to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” by 2030. Key targets include:

  • Safe and affordable drinking water for all.
  • Adequate sanitation and hygiene to prevent disease.
  • Reduced water pollution and increased wastewater treatment.
  • Protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems (wetlands, rivers, and aquifers).

Achieving SDG 6 is not just about water access—it impacts health, gender equality, poverty reduction, and climate resilience.

How ACEECA Advances SDG 6

1. Protecting and Restoring Water Ecosystems

ACEECA champions the conservation of critical wetlands, swamps, and watersheds, such as Ondiri Swamp in Kenya, a vital freshwater source. These ecosystems:

  • Filter and purify water naturally.
  • Support biodiversity and local livelihoods.
  • Mitigate floods and droughts by regulating water flow.

Through restoration projects and policy advocacy, ACEECA ensures these ecosystems are preserved for future generations.

2. Promoting Community Awareness & Sustainable Water Use

Many water crises stem from overuse, pollution, and poor management. ACEECA tackles this by:

  • Educating communities on water conservation techniques.
  • Training farmers on efficient irrigation to reduce waste.
  • Raising awareness on preventing water contamination from industrial and domestic waste.

3. Improving Access to Clean Water & Sanitation

In underserved regions, ACEECA works with local governments, NGOs, and private partners to:

  • Install rainwater harvesting systems in water-scarce areas.
  • Build sanitation facilities in schools and rural communities.
  • Advocate for policies that prioritize equitable water distribution.

4. Combating Water Pollution

Industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, and plastic waste threaten water quality. ACEECA addresses this through:

  • Community clean-up campaigns along rivers and lakes.
  • Advocacy for stricter pollution controls on industries.
  • Promoting eco-friendly waste disposal to prevent toxins from entering water systems.

ACEECA’s Mission in Alignment with SDG 6

ACEECA’s core mission—environmental conservation, sustainable development, and climate resilience—directly supports SDG 6. By:

✔ Protecting water sources, we ensure long-term water security.

✔ Empowering communities, we foster sustainable water management.

✔ Advocating for policy changes, we drive systemic improvements in water governance.
