1. Project Background

Kenya faces increasing climate shocks, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and extreme temperatures, which threaten food security and livelihoods—especially in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). The Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Building (CCARB) project seeks to empower vulnerable communities with locally led, sustainable solutions to adapt to climate change while enhancing long-term resilience.

This project aligns with Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and the Global Resilience Partnership.

2. Project Objectives

1. Enhance Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) – Promote drought-resistant crops, agroforestry, and water-efficient farming.
2. Strengthen Early Warning Systems – Improve access to weather forecasts and disaster preparedness training.
3. Boost Water & Soil Conservation – Support rainwater harvesting, terracing, and irrigation innovations.
4. Promote Alternative Livelihoods – Train communities on beekeeping, eco-tourism, and renewable energy enterprises.
5. Advocate for Policy Influence – Engage county governments in adopting climate-resilient development plans.

3. Key Activities

A. Climate-Smart Agriculture & Food Security

• Distribution of drought-tolerant seeds (e.g., sorghum, millet, green grams).
• Training on conservation farming (minimum tillage, crop rotation).
• Establishment of community seed banks for food security.

B. Water & Soil Management

• Construction of sand dams, shallow wells, and rooftop rainwater systems.
• Promotion of drip irrigation & solar-powered water pumps.
• Rehabilitation of degraded lands through agroforestry and terracing.

C. Disaster Risk Reduction & Early Warning

• Mobile-based weather alerts for farmers and pastoralists.
• Community disaster response teams trained in flood/drought mitigation.
• Climate risk mapping to identify vulnerable hotspots.

D. Alternative Livelihoods & Green Jobs

• Beekeeping & honey production for income diversification.
• Solar energy cooperatives (training women/youth in solar installation).
• Eco-tourism initiatives around restored ecosystems.

E. Policy Advocacy & Awareness

• County-level dialogues on climate-resilient budgeting.
• Radio programs & community forums on climate adaptation.
• Partnerships with research institutions for data-driven solutions.

4. Expected Outcomes

• 50,000+ farmers adopting climate-smart agriculture.
• 30% increase in household food security in target regions.
• 100+ water conservation structures built (dams, boreholes).

5. Sustainability & Scalability
