Project Overview

The School Greening Programme is a flagship environmental education and sustainability initiative led by the African Centre for Environmental Energy and Climate Advocacy (ACEECA). This programme is designed to promote environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation, and climate action among secondary school students across Kenya. Through hands-on activities like tree planting, organic gardening, and climate education, the initiative empowers young people to become active champions of a greener, healthier, and more resilient future.

Background and Rationale

Climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation are pressing challenges in Kenya. Schools, as hubs of learning and community development, offer a powerful platform to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility from an early age. However, many schools lack structured programmes that engage students in practical environmental conservation efforts. The School Greening Programme bridges this gap by integrating environmental education with real-life action, directly involving students in transforming their schools into eco-friendly spaces.

Goals and Objectives

Overall Goal:

To foster environmental awareness, climate resilience, and ecological restoration in Kenyan secondary schools through participatory greening initiatives.

Specific Objectives:

1. Promote tree planting and environmental restoration within school compounds and surrounding areas.
2. Instill climate change knowledge and environmental values among students through interactive learning.
3. Support the establishment of school gardens for food security, nutrition education, and income generation.
4. Encourage student-led eco-clubs to sustain environmental activities and promote peer learning.
5. Build capacity among teachers and school administrators to lead green school initiatives.

Key Activities

• Tree Planting Campaigns: Each school receives indigenous and fruit tree seedlings to plant within school grounds and designated community areas.
• Environmental Education Workshops: Students participate in training on climate change, waste management, biodiversity, and sustainable living.
• Establishment of School Gardens: Schools are supported to develop vegetable gardens using organic farming methods, which also contribute to nutrition and school feeding programmes.
• Formation of Environmental Clubs: Student eco-clubs are established or strengthened to lead ongoing greening activities, awareness campaigns, and environmental innovation competitions.
• Teacher Training and Engagement: Teachers and staff are trained in environmental management practices and integrated sustainability education.
